Freshly cut tree stump on bare ground surrounded by sawdust, stump grinding in Wichita

Wichita Stump Grinding and Removal

Tree gone, stump still in the yard? A stump is a trip hazard and a mowing problem. It can come out.

We grind stumps in Wichita and nearby towns. Call (316) 854-1376 and tell us how wide it is.

Grinding or full removal

  • Grinding.

A machine cuts the stump down below ground level into wood chips. The roots stay in the ground, and the stump takes several years to fully decompose. It is the common choice.

  • Full removal.

The stump and its main roots are dug or pulled out. It leaves a bigger hole and takes more work, and it is used when something is going to be built or planted right there.

Many yards only need grinding. If you are putting a patio, a footing or a new tree on the spot, say so when you call.

How stump work is priced

Stump grinding is usually priced by the inch, across the diameter. Wider stumps take longer and cost more. There is usually a minimum charge too, so a small one still costs something to bring the machine out.

Extras that can raise the number:

  • Hard access. A gate too narrow for the machine, a steep slope, a stump behind a fence.
  • Rocky soil.
  • Roots. Large roots that spread above ground add work.
  • A stump near a structure. Close to a house, a wall or a line.

Hauling off the grindings and adding topsoil are often priced separately from the grind.

For a rough range by size, use the tree cost calculator.

How to measure your stump

Measure straight across the widest part of the stump, at ground level, from one edge to the other. If it flares at the base, measure the base.

The calculator and the quote form use four sizes:

  • Up to 12 in
  • 13 to 24 in
  • 25 to 36 in
  • 37 to 48 in

Wider than 48 in? Call and tell us. Larger stumps cost more.

What happens to the chips

Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil in the hole. You have three choices:

  • Leave them.

Spread the chips on the surface as mulch, or leave them in the hole to season. Fresh grindings can pull nitrogen from new plantings.

  • Fill and level.

Add topsoil, mound it a little high because it will settle, then seed or sod.

  • Haul them off.

    This can cost extra.

If you are planting on the spot, ask about removing the chips first.

Rent a grinder or hire it

A rental grinder means you do the work. You pick up and return a heavy machine, run it, work around the roots, then clear a big pile of chips. It takes care to run safely.

Hiring means we bring the machine and do the grind. For a few stumps, hiring often costs about the same or less once you add rental, pickup and your time. For a wide stump or one near a house, hiring is the easier road.

The tree comes first

If the tree is still standing, see tree removal. For a tree that needs shaping, not removing, see tree trimming. For a tree on a roof or a yard full of storm debris, see emergency and storm damage.

How it works

  1. Call or send the form with how many stumps you have and how wide each is.
  2. We come out, check the access and what is near each stump, and measure.
  3. We grind and clean up as agreed. Hauling off the grindings and adding topsoil can cost extra.
